Meet the Intern: A Look into Shawn’s Handcrafted Watchband Line
During the 2016-2017 school year, Clockwork Synergy took on “Intern Shawn”, a High School Senior interested in learning about the workings of a small business. While learning about how our business is run, Shawn is also given the opportunity to create his own custom leather watch bands, learning everything from choosing the materials to marketing his handmade line. Over the next few months we will check in on his progress, but for now, we’d like you to get to know our intern!
1. A FEW DETAIL S ABOUT YOURSELF
Hey! My name is “Intern Shawn”, and I’m a High School Senior preparing for college. I am currently participating in an intensive Internship/Mentorship program at my school. As part of the course I must participate in an unpaid internship, documenting my observations and conducting extensive research, which will then be formulated into a thesis paper. In my free time I am an avid tennis player; this past tennis season through my school I won the Individual Regional Doubles Championship, as well as a Quarter-Final Finish in States!
2. WHY WERE YOU INTERESTED IN WORKING FOR CLOCKWORK SYNERGY?
For my internship/mentorship program, I am looking to observe the differences between how a small business works, versus the way big corporations work. Over the summer I interned at AIG insurance, a multi-national billion dollar corporation, in order to see the pros and cons of the corporate world.
Finding a company that fit the mold of a “big time corporation” wasn’t hard, however, to find an innovative small business which has multiple employees and has had great success was the challenge. As soon as Braswell, Clockwork Synergy owner, told me about his business, I knew that it would be the perfect place to intern.
Clockwork Synergy, an ecommerce provider of various watch straps/bands worldwide, is the perfect example of a small business that, through good leadership and a dedicated team, has stepped up to the next level and has become a dominant small business in their industry.
3. WHAT ARE SOME KEY DETAILS YOU ENVISION IN YOUR PRODUCT DESIGN?
High class. I want this band to be something you wear when you are going on a first date, or trying to nail that amazing job interview. This band is going to be sewn with horween leather, and my focus will be on making it suitable for Apple watches. Each band I craft by hand will be unique for you, and should therefore carry details and quality that a machine-manufactured band simply could not provide.
Comfort is also a big priority with this band design. I want you to be thinking about important things, like how you are going to ask that girl out, not how your watch band is annoying or awkward. My product will be something that gives you confidence. I want my product to be sophisticated and unique, while being something that my generation can appreciate.
4. WHAT WILL YOUR BIGGEST PERSONAL CHALLENGE BE IN CREATING YOUR OWN PRODUCT?
The actual design of the band. I have so many ideas; it’s hard to narrow it down. Art/drawing have never been my thing, so the actual design is going to be a little tough, but I’m excited to put my ideas into action!
